Abstract
In attempt to study the influense of Korean Ginseng components to hematopoiesis. We
applied the in vitro CFU-GM colony assay system with programable cryopreserved bone
marrow of normal subjects, and patients with non malignant hematological disorder or
hematological malignancy. Human placenta conditioned medium is used as a source of
colony stimulating factor during a period of squential bone marrow mononuclear cells
with (experimental study) or without (control study) Ginseng components such as total
saponin, Panaxadiol Panama-triol and lipid soluble non-saponin components (NSC).
It is of our suiprise that total saponin, Panaxadiol and Panaxatriol have no effect of
increase in GM-colony or GM-cluster activity, because of previous reports that
Gensanosides and prostisol can increase the peripheral blood cell counts in patients with
malignancy. But NSC has a statistically significant rising of CFU-GM activity in all of
observed individuals, regardless of culture period on 7 day, 14 day and 21 day or
underlined disease itself. The 100¥ìg of NSC in constant amount of medium is
considered as optimal concentration after obtaining plateau curve according to sequential
doubling of NSC dose. The exact mechanism explaining our observation would be
studied furthermore.
